mashonalandPicNomads Golf was first established in South Africa 1960. As its members were drawn from various clubs and played their regular competitions on a variety of different courses, the Nomads name seemed particularly appropriate.

Nomads Golf Flourished in South Africa and a club was established in Zimbabwe. There are now three clubs on Zimbabwe which operate under the umbrella of the controlling Zimbabwe body.

Nomads Golf in Zimbabwe holds its National Tournament annually and has field of up to 240 players.

The Nomads Movement has also spread to Botswana, New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Swaziland. Today there are close to 3000 Nomads spread around our clubs, all committed to our ideals of benefiting the game of golf and, in the process, raising substantial funding for causes that lend support for those less fortunate than ourselves.

                                                Captain’s Newsletter,

                                                Chapman game 12/2016 – November 6th, 2016.

Dear Fellow Nomads,

We had 122 players at the Chapman Golf Club with 2 prospective members and 3 guest. There were 0 No Shows.

Monthly Sponsor

Nomads Mashonaland would like to thank Nyasha Chinhara and Julian Borcherdsfor sponsoring our monthly game. We all really appreciate what you have done to help make the prizes worthwhile.

Chapman Golf Course

Chapman golf course is, in my mind, the most scenic and challenging course with beautiful views and lots of waterways mixed in well with suitably placed bunkers. Lovely to putt on decent greens. The facilities and staff were all up to their usual good standards and enjoyed by all the Nomads that I spoke to.

Thank Yous.

The Book in table and computer results were all handled with the usual proficiency and friendliness that we have come to expect at each Nomads game. Well done to Match Secretary Alison Clark, Judy Amira and Lynn Tapson for organising it once again.

Our starters, Rod Bennett and Rod Bennett were suitably controlled by our RSM Gordon Mackenziewith no hitches and most fourballs teeing off on time. So good of these guys to come down to each game to start us off and put us in line for the rest of the day finishing off with a little humour when necessary

I played with Chapman Golf Club Manager, Themba Sibanda, whilst Vice Captain, Clever played with Vice Captain Justice Udzembwe. Themba is the President of Zimbabwe Junior Golf so I had the opportunity to bounce ideas off of him on how best to improve what Nomads can do for the furtherance of golf with youngsters in Zimbabwe. There is still so much we, as Nomads Mashonaland, can do for Junior golf and this should be one of our priorities going forward from here. He has asked if anyone has old golf kitthat they are no longer using to please bring it down to the Brooke on Sunday so that it can be used by Zimbabwe Junior Golf

Fines Session

Doug Jaffray gave his first ever fines session that was fun to listen to lasting a suitably long period of time. It is good to see new guys taking up the baton. Well done to Nyasha for bringing on fresh talent . If you feel that you are such a person and would like to be given a chance to try your skills at one of our forthcoming games then please contact our P.R.O., Nyasha Chinhara.

Sick List.

There were no reports of any Nomads being sick – obviously guys only succumb to illness in the winter months. Please let your Captain know of any Nomads that become ill so that he can contact him and wish him a speedy recovery

Doug Pechey

It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of HLM Doug Pechey. He passed on in Arizona, USA, on Sunday evening due to kidney complications.

Doug served as National Chairman of Nomads in 1971/72 and in 1982 was the Coordinator of the first National Tournament to be held in Rhodesia. He was accorded Honorary Life Member status in the late 1970's due to his tremendous service to Nomads.

Late in life he moved to the USA and communication being what it was Nomads lost touch with him. This was rectified in 2008 when he was located and brought back into the fold. His enthusiasm was still plain to see and a year later he made a special trip to make an appearance at the National Tournament in Durban 2009.

Doug will be sorely missed and our heartfelt condolences are sent out to his family and friends.

An Honorary Life Member of Nomads is accorded that status due to his selfless service to the entire Nomads Club and the National Executive ask you to please observe a minutes silence in remembrance, with the reading of the Creed at your monthly meetings in October.

The loss of an Honorary Life Member touches us all.

Roy Waterworth

Past National Chairman and Captain, Roy Waterworth, died last month after having a stroke about a year ago. Roy joined Nomads in 1975 and was also a Nationals Coordinator in 2000. We wish his wife Shirley and his family our deepest sympathies

Congratulationsalso to the following Nomads for the awardsgiven to them at Chapman Golf Club:

Declin Kumse                     40 Points – Borrowdale Brooke

Alan Graham                      40 Points – Borrowdale Brooke

Julian Buss                          40 Points – Borrowdale Brooke

Mike Baylis                          5 Year Tie

Batirai Manhando            5 Year Tie

Alison Clark                         35 Year Badge.

Alison Clark

Alison was inducted as a lady helper in 1981, shortly after her husband , John, joined in 1979. Alison became match secretary in 1983 and did this for 7 yrs. This means that out of the surviving past captains she was match secretary for Stan Swaile (1985) and Corrie van Rensburg (1988). She also held this position for other captains who have all passed away: Bill Cornish, Ian Crawford, Frank Leathes, Eric Windell & Ellis Milne. There were no computers in those days so Alison had to do everything manually completing her task in time enough to start prize giving at the usual 6.30pm

Alison and John have 2 daughters and Alison needed to spend time with their sporting activities so Nomads took a back seat for a few years.

Alison has served on numerous nationals, and charity days as match secretary, as well as on the main committee , as the member in charge of the house and did sponsorship as well. A very versatile and capable lady and truly committed to nomads. Nomads zimbabwe and especially mashonaland, have been very lucky to have had Alison supporting them for past 35 years.

Tata & Gold Cup.

Our next game is our Gold Cup to be played this year at Borrowdale Brooke golf club on Sunday 27th December. It is an afternoon game. This final game of the year is THE Nomads tournament where winners of various sections battle it out for extra prizes. The evening Prize giving is an extended one with lots of awards being given for those of us that performed well on the golf courses played on by Nomads at our monthly games. The Gold Cup has been generously sponsored by Elliot Shoniwa , MD of Tata Vehicles in Zimbabwe and we owe him and his company our sincere thanks for this gracious offer

Nomadically yours

Nomads Creed

No Man is an Island entire of itself

Every man if a piece of the continent; a part of the main.

Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind

And, therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee
